PITTSBURGH -- The off-day on Monday comes at a good time for the Marlins and slugger Giancarlo Stanton. It allows another day for the three-time All-Star right fielder to rest his bruised right wrist.
The encouraging news for Stanton is he's feeling considerably better, and he should be ready to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday against the A's at Marlins Park.
On Sunday against the Pirates, Stanton entered in the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter and struck out in the 3-1 loss.  
Before the game, manager Don Mattingly didn't rule out Stanton being available off the bench. But that would only be if he was completely ready to go.
"He's feeling better," Mattingly said. "We'll see."
Stanton received a scare on Saturday in a 7-6 loss to the Pirates. In the first inning, he was struck by a Trevor Williams fastball tracked by Statcast™ at 95.3 mph.
The Marlins and Stanton were relieved when an X-ray came back negative, revealing no breaks. Still, he was dealing with swelling in the wrist, but much of that subsided in the morning.
Initially, the slugger feared the worse, that he had fractured a bone.
"I'm just glad it's not broken," Stanton said. "I thought it was snapped."
Ichiro Suzuki is filling in for Stanton in right field.
The Marlins have been playing better, especially since Stanton was moved to the second spot in the lineup in late May.
Stanton is having an All-Star-worthy season, sporting a slash line of .288/.367/.566 with 16 home runs and 42 RBIs.
On Friday night, Stanton belted one of the more impressive home runs of the season, a moonshot that landed on top of the batter's eye in center. Statcast™ projected the blast at 449 feet with an exit velocity of 110.6 mph.
Miami's offense already is without power-hitting first baseman Justin Bour, who is on the 10-day disabled list with a left ankle bone bruise.
If he keeps progressing, he should be back on Tuesday.
"That's what we're hoping," Mattingly said.
