Pagan has 'minor setback,' will see back specialist

SAN FRANCISCO -- Stymied in his recovery from back problems, Giants center fielder Angel Pagan will consult renowned spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins on Wednesday in Los Angeles to discuss potential methods of easing his discomfort.

Pagan was eligible to leave the 15-day disabled list Monday. Instead, he endured what he called a "minor setback" while trying to run at AT&T Park during the Giants' scheduled off-day.

"I think looking forward to the future we want to make sure we have the best plan possible so I can come back strong," Pagan said Tuesday.

Said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, "We don't know enough to say if it's gotten worse or if it's a one-day deal."

Pagan, who has a bulging disk in his back, hopes that Watkins can guide him and the Giants' medical staff in the right direction.

"We've been doing everything -- treatment, rest, medication, injections," said Pagan, who has received at least two painkilling shots. "We want to see if there's anything, a different treatment we can do, to make it better."

Pagan emphasized that surgery, which probably would end his season, currently is not being considered.
