PHOENIX -- Joe Panik collected three hits, including an RBI double, and Chris Stratton pitched three hitless innings in the Giants' 3-1 win over the Brewers on Thursday at Maryvale Baseball Park.
It was the second of two Spring Training matchups between the teams, who will meet again on Opening Day at Miller Park. Madison Bumgarner is already scheduled to start for the Giants, but Brewers manager Craig Counsell has yet to announce the home team's plan.
On Thursday, Stratton started for San Francisco and held the Brewers scoreless over three innings, allowing only a walk with two strikeouts. The Brewers didn't have a hit until Alex Presley singled in the fifth inning.
Stratton and the Giants led from the start after San Francisco sent seven men to the plate in the first inning against Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson, who managed to limit the damage to Grant Green's run-scoring grounder.
Nelson surrendered one run on two hits and three walks in two-plus innings.
"I just felt like the ball was coming off my hand a little 'off' today," Nelson said. "It's frustrating, but the positive was my changeup was really good today, and that's what I've been working on, so that was good to see. I know down the road the fastball command is going to be much better and my curveball and slider will be better, but being able to throw multiple good changeups was encouraging today."
Panik made it 2-0 with a fifth-inning double off Brewers relief candidate Junior Guerra. The hit scored Angel Pagan, who had led off the inning with a single.
Up next for Giants:Jeff Samardzija, who has looked progressively stronger with each start, will make his third Cactus League start as the Giants host Seattle on Friday. Samardzija, who signed a five-year, $90 million contract as a free agent, allowed one run in two innings on March 2 against the Angels before yielding one run and five hits in three innings last Sunday against Los Angeles. The right-hander struck out the side in the first inning against the Dodgers and finished with five strikeouts.
