Posey takes break to rest sore foot

Giants catcher took foul ball off instep in Sunday's game

DENVER -- Buster Posey got an unexpected day off Tuesday after a torrid start to his season. Posey took a Chase Utley foul tip to the instep of his right foot Sunday and was still feeling it following a scheduled off-day in the Giants' schedule.
"He bruised it pretty good, and it's pretty sore, so he needs a break," manager Bruce Bochy said before Tuesday's series opener in Colorado. "He even said, 'How about if I test it and play today?' I said, 'You know what, let's just wait until tomorrow.' We're all thinking he'll be good to go tomorrow."
X-rays came back negative, but the Giants see no need to push the 2012 National League MVP and three-time All-Star. Posey said he hadn't had the chance to fully test himself on the foot yet, but said he thought he could play if he had to. He expects to be back in the lineup Wednesday, and his manager said he was available to pinch-hit Tuesday.
"If he had to, I'd put him back behind the plate," Bochy said. "If something happened, he could catch. We're just being a little cautious, but he'll tell you, he could go. If this was September, he'd be catching."
Posey is hitting .391 (9-for-23) through his first seven games of the season, with two homers, five RBIs and a stolen base, leading him to joke about how much his "wheels" are a part of his game. He's a career .396 hitter (67-for-169) hitter at Coors Field with nine homers and 34 RBIs. He boasts the highest batting average among active players at Coors Field.
