Giants' game against Cubs canceled due to rain

MESA, Ariz. -- Amid extreme confusion, the Giants' exhibition Saturday against the Chicago Cubs was rained out. No makeup date was scheduled.

Typically, when a game is postponed or canceled, all of the principals from both teams find out immediately, including the media relations staffs. But some of the Cubs personnel didn't know about the rainout until they heard the public-address announcer inform the fans.

The mixup could have been partly due to the appearance of the sun about a half-hour after the game's scheduled start was delayed. The sunlight and the apparent attempts of the grounds crew at brand-new Cubs Park to make the field playable created the impression that the game at least would be started, if not completed.
