SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants continued to receive tangible proof of their excellence in the field, as shortstop Brandon Crawford and catcher Buster Posey were named 2016 Wilson Defensive Players of the Year for both leagues at their respective positions Friday.
The Giants were also named Defensive Team of the Year. by Wilson.
The Giants recorded a Major League-low 72 errors, predictably resulting in the big leagues' best fielding percentage (.988). Moreover, according to FanGraphs, the Giants ranked third in the Majors this season with 50 defensive runs saved, trailing only the Cubs (81) and Astros (51).

Amid all that, the Giants went 17 consecutive games without committing an error from Aug. 15 to Sept. 2. It was not only the longest streak in franchise history, but also the longest streak in National League history.
Both Crawford and Posey won the Wilson award last year. On Tuesday, Crawford captured his second consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award among NL shortstops. Posey and second baseman Joe Panik also won Gold Gloves, making the Giants the lone team in the big leagues to boast three recipients.

Crawford, 29, has improved his performance, whether it's measured through conventional or contemporary methods. He has trimmed his total of errors from 21 in 2014 to 13 in 2015 to 11 this year. His corresponding fielding percentages have increased from .967 to .979 to .983.

Additionally, Crawford virtually doubled his Ultimate Zone Rating from 10.9 in 2015 to 21.3 this season.
Posey, 29, has earned a reputation for his superior "pitch framing" -- receiving borderline pitches in such a way to make them look like strikes. Statistically, his performance remained virtually constant in 2016. He committed three errors, up from two last year. But he caught more innings (1,069 this year, 901 2/3 in 2015) as his fielding percentage barely wavered (.997 this year, .998 in 2015).
Posey threw out 28 of 75 runners attempting to steal.
