SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Derek Law appeared destined for the Major Leagues before Tommy John surgery in June 2014 rudely interrupted his progress. Having regained his health, Law again looks bound for the big leagues.
The right-handed reliever with the uncanny control -- he has averaged 2.7 walks and 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings in five Minor League seasons -- has looked impressive in his bullpen sessions this week, including Sunday.
"He looks like a new man," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Law, reminding listeners that the 25-year-old nearly made the Opening Day roster coming out of Spring Training in 2014. Bochy remarked that Law, who compiled a 4.56 ERA in 28 appearances at Double-A Richmond last year, could advance quickly again.
"That's why he's here," Bochy said.

• Bochy would prefer to see Matt Duffy rest a little more this season. Duffy started last season's final 118 games, including 79 at third base.
"I'd like to rest him a little more," Bochy said. "An occasional day off will serve him well."
At this juncture, possible fill-ins at third base include Ehire Adrianza and non-roster invitee Conor Gillaspie.
• Bochy said that to receive a break, Giants pitchers will not throw off mounds Tuesday or Wednesday. This should freshen up all of San Francisco's arms for the first rounds of live batting practice Thursday. Position players are due to report to camp Monday, followed by Tuesday's initial full-squad workout.
