Giants doing well with offseason conditioning

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner delivered a mostly upbeat summary regarding the conditioning efforts of various players.

Groeschner said third baseman Pablo Sandoval is "doing well" in his efforts to reach a decent playing weight. Groeschner has maintained regular contact with Sandoval.

"He keeps telling us he is [in shape]," Groeschner said of Sandoval, who's eligible for free agency after next season. "It's his time to do it."

Catcher Buster Posey's workouts include an emphasis at developing his lower body strength, which should help him better withstand the rigors of his position.

Right-hander Tim Lincecum has been working out five days a week, Groeschner said. Lincecum received approval for his regimen from strength and conditioning coach Carl Kochan, who visited the two-time Cy Young Award winner at his Seattle home.

Groeschner plans on traveling to Miami on Tuesday to check on second baseman Marco Scutaro, who underwent surgery to have a stabilizing pin removed from his left pinkie.

Right-hander Tim Hudson soon will begin throwing on flat ground but won't test his injured right foot by running until after the new year.

Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt has almost fully recovered from his sports hernia and will begin playing catch this week.
