Giants shrug off Cardinals' disputed victory

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants didn't seem to dwell over the St. Louis Cardinals' controversial 4-3 victory over Cincinnati on Thursday that kept them a game behind San Francisco in the National League Wild Card race.
Television replays showed that 's game-winning hit should have been ruled a ground-rule double that would have kept on third base. Instead, Carpenter scored the winning run, which stuck when the Reds did not request a review. The Giants therefore had to win to stay ahead of St. Louis, and did so with a 7-2 decision over Colorado.
Giants right fielder felt too good about the Giants' triumph to worry about the Cardinals.
"These things happen," Pence said. "It was a good hit [by Molina]. I don't really totally understand the issue. They [the Cardinals] won the game. It's nothing to be concerned about. The closeness [of the Wild Card competition] is pretty fun."
Giants general manager Bobby Evans declined to get drawn into the fuss.
"We're just focused on our game and the things we can control," he said in a text message.
However, Bruce Bochy, who worries for a living in his role as San Francisco's manager, didn't like what he had learned about the Cardinals-Reds affair.
"Obviously in this situation you hate to hear that," said Bochy, who hadn't seen replays of Molina's hit. "I guess there were two outs, too, which is a big difference. I don't know what's going to happen. You hate to see that happen in these games because they're all so critical and important. It's a tough break for the Reds and a tough break for us because obviously [we're] battling to get there."
