SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that right fielder Hunter Pence was on schedule to begin his Minor League injury rehabilitation assignment Wednesday or Thursday.
Pence looked ready to test his strained left hamstring sooner, given the high frequency with which he drove batting-practice pitches over AT&T Park's outfield walls.
Pence, who played in at least 154 games per season from 2008-14 before injuries began nagging him, appeared in all of San Francisco's 37 games when he hurt his hamstring. Since then, Justin Ruggiano and Mac Williamson have divided activity in right field.
Entering Saturday, Pence was tied for second among Giants hitters with 16 RBIs despite missing 13 games. He also had three home runs while batting .243 with a .289 on-base percentage and a .338 slugging percentage. All three averages would be career lows if Pence maintained those rates through the rest of the season.
Parker could start injury rehab soon
Outfielder Jarrett Parker's fractured right clavicle has healed enough to enable him to begin an injury rehab assignment sometime next week. Parker could return to the active roster in two weeks if he continues to progress smoothly. Parker revealed these timetables, which Bochy confirmed.
Parker hasn't played since running into AT&T Park's left-field wall to snare a drive by Colorado's DJ LeMahieu on April 15. Saturday, Parker took batting practice on the field for the first time since being injured.
"What I've made peace with is I play the game trying to do the best I can and trying to make every play and do everything I can to help the team. In that moment, that's what I did," Parker said, referring to his fateful catch. "I thought I had an extra step or two. Obviously I didn't. You live and you learn and you move forward."
• Third baseman Conor Gillaspie, who has been on the disabled list since May 11 with back spasms, endured what Bochy called a "setback" by experiencing tightness. That prompted Gillaspie to undergo an MRI to determine the source of the discomfort. Team physicians were expected to examine results of the MRI later Saturday.
