PHOENIX -- Jeff Samardzija allowed just one run over eight innings and got a three-run homer from Joe Panik as the Giants beat the D-backs for the second straight game, 3-1, on Friday night at Chase Field.
Samardzija (5-2) worked out of jams in the first two innings, but managed to settle in after that, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.. The lone damage the D-backs could inflict on him was when Shelby Miller led off the fifth with a triple and scored as Jean Segura followed with a single to center.
"It's important to keep the ball down here," said Samardzija, who had the benefit of two of the seven double plays in the game made behind him. "You've got to be down in the zone. You've got to mix speeds. It's hard to get a good spinning pitch here in Arizona. So you have to be down in the zone with your other pitches and work in your spinning pitches when you can."

Coming off his best start of the year Miller (1-4) kept the Giants off the board through the first five innings thanks in part to three double plays. Things turned quickly against him in the sixth when Angel Pagan and Denard Span led off with singles and Panik hit a 3-0 pitch down the right-field line for a home run. More >
"The last thing I'm thinking is he's swinging at 3-0," Miller said. "I was just trying to get back in the count."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Panik stricken: For the second consecutive night, the Giants second baseman homered. On Thursday night, Panik hit a two-run shot during the fifth inning off Zack Greinke. Panik now has five on the season.

First triple: Miller collected his first career triple in the fifth when he hit a ball off the base of the center-field wall. Though he would score to give his team the lead, all the running on the bases combined with a 29-pitch top of the fifth might have contributed to his struggles in the sixth.
"It's hard to tell," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "He was throwing the ball well. The first two guys reached on singles, he did a good job of battling them. That's always something you think about after the fact, you know, hits a triple and has to run. That takes a little bit out of most pitchers."

Pagan back: After missing 11 consecutive games with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. Angel Pagan returned with a third-inning walk and a lead-off single in the sixth. He was on base when Panik hit the homer.

Home woes: The D-backs' struggles at Chase Field continued as they lost at home for the fifth straight time. They have now dropped seven of eight and are 5-14 at Chase compared to a 12-7 mark on the road.
"Just beat us," Hale said of Samardzija. "That's the bottom line with that tonight."

When Panik homered on a 3-0 pitch, it was the first time he'd even swung on that count in his career, taking the previous 37 of them.

Giants: It's the third game of the four-game series in a 5:10 p.m. PT start. Jake Peavy is going to try to shake his 1-4 start with an 8.47 ERA.
D-backs: Coming off his best start of the year, left-hander Patrick Corbin gets the nod against the Giants on Saturday night at Chase Field. Corbin tossed seven shutout innings last Sunday against the Braves in Atlanta.
