Giants option Kontos to make room for Cain

LOS ANGELES -- With the bullpen's season-long members thriving, the Giants made the easiest choice Saturday and optioned right-hander George Kontos to Triple-A Fresno to create roster room for starter Matt Cain.

"I don't know who else I can send down there. They're all throwing so well," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Kontos threw well in his lone Giants appearance after being recalled Tuesday, blanking Pittsburgh for two innings on Wednesday.

But the Giants had no intention of altering the bullpen that entered Saturday with a 1.75 ERA, the best in the Majors. Moreover, the less-established members of the relief corps, right-handers Juan Gutierrez and Jean Machi, have no Minor League options remaining.

Cain, recovered from the cut on the tip of his right index finger that forced him to miss two starts, faced the Dodgers on Saturday.
