It's been a different sort of offseason for the Giants.
One year after making a pair of high-profile acquisitions in Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria, the Giants have experienced a far slower and quieter winter, leaving the club with quite a few question marks as pitchers and catchers reported to Scottsdale, Ariz., for the start of Spring Training on Tuesday.

While the Giants believe better health and consistency from their incumbent core of talent will help them improve from their 98- and 89-loss seasons over the past two years, they're also hoping to see more reinforcements arrive this spring, especially with players like Bryce Harper still available on the free-agent market.
"I've always felt very fortunate to be a part of an organization that tries to put a team on the field that has a chance to make the playoffs," catcher Buster Posey said Friday. "To just get in and have that chance to compete in October. I sure hope that's still the case. I think that's all I can hope for is that it's still the case.
"I'm hopeful that we are in a position where we say, 'Yeah, we're making those improvements to where we think we've got a chance to be there at the end of this long season.'"

Left-hander Derek Holland's one-year, $7 million contract currently stands as the Giants' biggest outlay of the offseason, and the club has yet to sign a free-agent position player. That's likely to change before the start of the regular season, as president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has expressed a desire to add multiple outfielders and a backup catcher.
"I think you look at the situation, and we have to be open-minded about the outfield and behind the plate," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We'll see where we're at. Those discussions are still going on. There's still some pretty good players out there that we're talking about.
"I think you'll see some additions here as we go into Spring Training."

While the Giants' interest in Harper appears genuine, they'll have to enter camp with the assumption that their current inventory of talent will be what's available to them come Opening Day, particularly in the outfield.
The Giants have been encouraged by Steven Duggar's recovery from shoulder surgery and plan to give him an opportunity to start in center field. They are also hoping Mac Williamson will be able to realize the potential he showed last year before a concussion cut his season short. Drew Ferguson, Austin Slater and Chris Shaw round out the Giants' outfield mix and should also receive opportunities to impress this spring.
"I think you have to assume this is the club," Bochy said. "Until things change, that's how you have to approach it because you can't assume anything is going to happen. I'm sure there's a pretty good possibility [of more additions], but hey, this is the team I have, and this is the team that we will get ready for the season. It's going to be up to myself, staff and Farhan for us to get creative and have the best team out there."
Position players are scheduled to report to Scottsdale by Sunday, with the first full-squad workout set for the following day. The Giants will open their Cactus League schedule against the Angels in Tempe on Feb. 23.
