SAN FRANCISCO -- For the second consecutive game Sunday, the Giants were shut out through the first nine innings.
It even surprised manager Bruce Bochy following Sunday's 2-0 series finale loss to the Rockies.
"I didn't see that coming with this offense," he said. "We've been in a little rut the last couple of days with the bats. Just gotta get them going."
With great defense and fine outings from Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija over both games, it's hard not to look at the offense.
Saturday's woes were overshadowed by Matt Duffy's 13th-inning walk-off double, but Sunday the Giants didn't have enough clutch hits. San Francisco was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position Sunday and 2-for-8 on Saturday.
"Those guys threw the ball well," Buster Posey said of the Colorado pitchers. "I'm thinking over my at-bats the last two days. They kept the fastball down well, threw a hard slider. They're throwing 86-, 88-mph sliders that are going down. If they're not leaving that up in the zone that can be challenging."
In the finale, the Giants struck out at inopportune times. They had bases loaded with one out in the second and punched out twice in a row. Then with one out in the seventh, they had a runner at third and struck out twice again.
Then Posey batted in the eighth with runners on first and second and two outs to face righty Chad Qualls. He flied out to right. It's a trend. Posey entered the game 5-for-30 with runners in scoring position.
"I need to be better at it," he said. "I haven't been good enough at it this year. Sometimes it's as easy as getting back to the basics and simplifying things."
Posey already had a scheduled day off for the home series opener at 7:15 p.m. PT Monday against Toronto. Bochy believes it might help.
"I think it's fair to say the last few games he's out of synch," Bochy said. "He's just not seeing the ball as well as he normally does."
