Petit to replace Bumgarner in season finale

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that after speaking with Madison Bumgarner, the two concluded the ace will not pitch Sunday's season finale. With San Francisco out of postseason contention, Yusmeiro Petit is scheduled to replace the left-hander.

"We worked him pretty hard the last three starts," Bochy said of Bumgarner. "There's no point in Madison making this start."

Bochy also cited Bumgarner's workload in the 2014 postseason as another reason the team chose to refrain from having him pitch in the last game of '15.

"You go back to last year, how hard we rode him," Bochy said.

Chris Heston will start Friday and Jake Peavy will get the call on Saturday night for San Francisco, but Bochy said he may decide to give everyone on the staff a chance to pitch a few innings.

"They're all going to get work," Bochy said. "We're not going to overwork anybody. ... We'll probably use a lot of the 'pen here over the last four days."

Bochy said he would like to get Peavy some innings because of how fresh he still is after missing much of the first half of the season.

"Jake's missed a lot of time, so he's all right to go," Bochy said. "It could be short work. We still are going to need some innings out of our starters."
