Gio runs into trouble after HBP
Lefty allows two runs in sixth after being hit on pitching elbow
CINCINNATI -- Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez received a no-decision in an 8-5 loss to the Reds on Saturday.
In the first five innings, Gonzalez allowed two runs. But after he was hit by a pitch thrown by right-hander Raisel Iglesias in the top of the sixth inning, Gonzalez had problems getting outs in the bottom of the frame, allowing two runs before manager Matt Williams took him out of the game and replaced him with right-hander Blake Treinen with one out.
It didn't help that Gonzalez was hit on his pitching elbow. He was shaking the elbow throughout the sixth inning, but he didn't give any excuses as to why he had difficulty on the mound.
"As a pitcher, you want to be as competitive as possible," Gonzalez said. " ... That's just me wanting to go out there and pitch. There is no better way to put it. I have to deal with it a little bit better. I have to be more aggressive in the strike zone."
