Golden Spikes preseason watch list revealed

February 16th, 2016

USA Baseball on Tuesday unveiled its 50-player preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country.
The 39th annual award will be presented on June 30 in Los Angeles. The award is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation.
"We are pleased to announce the 50 members of the preseason Watch List for the 2016 Golden Spikes Award," USA Baseball executive director and chief executive officer Paul Seiler said in a statement. "We look forward to following these athletes closely during the course of the baseball season and identifying the best representatives for this prestigious award."
Many of MLBPipeline's Top 50 Draft Prospects are on the preseason watch list, including the top six.
Miami catcher Zack Collins, Louisville right-hander Kyle Funkhouser (No. 23), Oklahoma infielder Sheldon Neuse and Stanford right-hander Cal Quantrill (20) are on the preseason Golden Spikes Award list for the second straight year. Navy left-hander Luke Gillingham, Louisville left-hander Brendan McKay and Maryland right-hander Mike Shawaryn (34) also are on the list after finishing as 2015 semifinalists.
In addition, two high school pitchers are named: Barnegat (N.J.) High School left-hander Jason Groome (1) and St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Overland Park, Kan.) right-hander Riley Pint (4). There also are six non-NCAA Division 1 players represented.

Fan voting will continue to be a part of the Golden Spikes Award, beginning on June 1, after the semifinalists are named. Fans will be able to vote at GoldenSpikesAward.com.
