Greeneville rally falls short at home against Bristol

June 16th, 2021

GREENEVILLE – Chris Williams delivered a single that scored a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Bristol would hold on to secure a 6-5 victory at Pioneer Park on Tuesday night.

Greeneville (6-4) had its three-game winning streak snapped after the State Liners rallied for five unanswered runs, including a four-run fifth inning. The Flyboys drop to 2-4 this season when scoring fewer than 10 runs in a contest.

The Flyboys would take an early 1-0 lead in the game as Jonathan Hogart delivered a single in the bottom of the first inning that allowed Homer Bush, Jr. to score. Jake Dacunto notched the first of his two doubles on the night with two outs in the second inning. Bush, Jr. added to the Greeneville lead as his single scored Bush, Jr. to make it 2-0.

Will Saxton kept the Bristol offense in check as he worked out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the second inning. Following back-to-back singles and a walk, Saxton would get Bristol’s Grayson Preslar to strikeout to end the inning. The State Liners trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning as Tate Kight tallied a double off the wall in right field to score a run.

Bristol knotted the score in the fifth inning against Greeneville reliever Brett Anderson as a run-scoring single with one out following an error and walk made it 2-2. State Liner shortstop Cort Maynard delivered the big hit of the inning as his three-run home run to left field gave Bristol a 5-2 advantage.

The Bristol bullpen would keep the Greeneville offense in check through the middle-innings of the contest as the Flyboys scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to an RBI groundout from Trevor Austin to make it 5-3. Bristol added a crucial run in the top of the ninth inning as Ryan Wetzel was hit with the bases loaded to increase the advantage to 6-3.

Eddie Micheletti and Tayler Aguilar started the rally for Greeneville in the ninth with back-to-back walks after Hogart was robbed of a hit to start the inning. A groundout from Christian Ficca advanced both runners into scoring position for Williams, who delivered a bloop-hit to make it 6-5 as both runners scored. Bristol closed the game out as its ninth pitcher of the night would get Jac Croom to ground out to third to preserve the 6-5 decision for the State Liners.

Saxton took the no-decision for Greeneville after scattering one run on four hits to go along with five strikeouts and two walks. Derrick Rabb, John Day, and Carter Nowak combined to toss 3.1 scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen for Greeneville. Bush, Jr. finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate, while Dacunto went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
