Greeneville slugs its way past Johnson City in home opener

GREENEVILLE – Greeneville scored 10 runs midway through its inaugural home opener against Johnson City to notch its second straight win and hand the Doughboys a 12-5 loss on Tuesday night at Pioneer Park.

Greeneville (3-2) entered the day tied with Bristol, Elizabethton, and Johnson City for the lead in the Appalachian League West Division standings. Chris Williams finished the night 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored for the Flyboys. Eddie Micheletti and Jake Dacunto each added a pair of hits to go along with a pair of RBI for Greeneville.

Johnson City scored the opening run of the night in the top of the first inning as Jaxson Crull scored from third on a wild pitch by Greeneville starter Bryce Mayer. The Doughboys added to their advantage in the top of the fourth inning as Cherokee Nichols scored to make it 2-0 while Greeneville turned a double play to trade a run for a pair of outs.

The Flyboys would get things going offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning as Jonathan Hogart and Christian Ficca scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball to knot the score, 2-2. Dacunto highlighted the inning for Greeneville with a double that plated a pair of runners to give the Flyboys their first lead of the night.

Greeneville wouldn’t look back as the Flyboys added three runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 10-3. Johnson City would score a pair of unearned runs against the Flyboys in the top of the eighth inning to trim the deficit to 10-5 only to see Greeneville answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Mayer took the no-decision for Greeneville after allowing one run, off three hits, to go along with five walks and six strikeouts through three innings of work. Logan Peterson improved to 2-0 on the season after working three innings while issuing a pair of runs for the Flyboys. Cameron Wagoner tallied five strikeouts in two innings of relief for Greeneville, while Sam Peddycord closed the door in the ninth inning.

Greeneville hosts the Johnson City Doughboys for the final game of a two-game series at Pioneer Park on Wednesday, June 9, at 7 p.m. It will be All You Can Eat Wednesday at the ballpark as the Flyboys continue their inaugural four-game homestand.
