SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Before the General Manager meetings on Tuesday, numerous MLB clubs were on hand at Grand Canyon University to attend a showcase for former Royals closer Greg Hollland.
His former team was one of several attending the workout as Holland, a free agent, hopes to draw interest after missing all of 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
KC's assistant general manager, Scott Sharp, represented the Royals at the workout. Reps from the Marlins, Phillies, Yankees, Rangers and Twins were also believed to be in attendance.
"It's tough to evaluate in November," Sharp said.
Holland's velocity on his fastball reportedly ranged from 88-91 mph, considerably lower than during his peak years as one of the game's dominant closers.
Holland had his surgery in October of 2015 and it can take anywhere from 12-18 months for some pitchers to regain their previous velocity.
Holland, who will turn 31 on Nov. 20, last pitched for the Royals on Sept. 18, 2015, when he blew a save in a 5-4 walk-off loss at Detroit. He finished that season with 32 saves and a 3.83 ERA.
A 10th-round pick in the Draft in 2007, Holland made $8.25 million in 2015 and was not offered a contract last season as he rehabbed, mostly in Arizona.
Holland combined to save 93 games for the Royals with a 1.32 ERA from 2013-14.
