PITTSBURGH -- Right fielder was carted off the field during the sixth inning of the Pirates' 4-3 win over the D-backs on Monday at PNC Park due to a sprained right ankle.
Polanco sustained what the team described as "right ankle discomfort" while chasing a foul ball down the right-field line. Wearing a walking boot after the game, Polanco said X-rays were negative; nothing in his ankle was broken, just sprained. But he feared the worst when his right foot planted into the short wall.
"Just asking God, 'Please, God, it's not broken. It's not broken,'" said Polanco, who didn't play in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the D-backs. "I know how I hit it. It was hard. ... Just stay positive and wait until tomorrow."
hit a high fly ball to right with one out in the sixth, and Polanco ran after it. He slowed down as he approached the fence that runs parallel to the foul line, but he did not slow down enough. As he tracked the ball, Polanco lost sight of the fence. He awkwardly twisted his ankle as he ran into the wall and landed hard as he tumbled.
"The regular wall is in your face; you can see it. It's so low, just went right to the wall with my ankle," Polanco said. "It was hurting. But thank God, nothing broke there. They showed me the X-ray. Everything was negative, thank God. We have to wait until tomorrow."
Polanco pulled himself to his feet, using the fence to help support his weight as assistant athletic trainer Ben Potenziano and manager Clint Hurdle made their way out to the right-field corner. After hobbling a few steps with some help, Polanco was carted off the field.
replaced Polanco in right field. Polanco just came off the disabled list Thursday and returned to the lineup Friday after resting a strained left hamstring. The 25-year-old cleanup man was seemingly hitting his stride at the plate following a rough start, batting .362 with three homers in his past 14 games.

Polanco was not the Pirates' only injured player Monday. Catcher limped off the field after swatting a go-ahead triple to left-center field in the seventh inning. Stewart felt a pull in his lower hamstring/upper calf as he rounded second base, but he reached third safely.
"I feel all right. It's not too bad," Stewart said afterward. "I got checked out. Nothing major really showed up in the preliminary testing. Hopefully it's just a strain. We'll see how it is in the morning and take it from there."
