HOUSTON -- Astros infielder Yulieski Gurriel, a Cuban who was dealing with the sudden death of Marlins pitcher José Fernández, hung an Astros jersey with Fernandez's name and No. 16 in the dugout during Monday's game against the Mariners to honor his fellow countryman.
Gurriel, who knew Fernandez and whose younger brother, Lourdes, played with him, had the jersey hanging in his locker Monday before it was moved to the dugout for the game. Several players touched it on their way to the field.
"It's just a way to showcase the emotions that I feel and how I feel, how to respect and honor him today," Gurriel said. "That's the reason why I have the jersey today."

The 24-year-old Fernandez was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning in Miami Beach. A two-time All-Star, he was winding down his best big league season, posting a 16-8 record with a 2.86 ERA with a franchise-record 253 strikeouts.
Gurriel said he hopes Fernandez's memory lasts forever.
"I don't want to this just to be about one day," he said. "I want it to last a while. Today it will be up, and after that I'll take it to my homeland and put it away just to keep him in my mind."
