CHICAGO -- The D-backs did not pick up a starting pitcher before Monday's non-waiver Trade Deadline, and general manager Mike Hazen said it was simply a matter of priorities.
Arizona made its biggest acquisition almost two weeks before the Deadline by nabbing outfielder J.D. Martinez, and then on Monday, it added reliever David Hernandez and infielder Adam Rosales.
The D-backs were tempted to look at starters after left-hander Robbie Ray was struck in the head by a liner and suffered a concussion days before the Deadline, but instead, they will look for a solution from within the system as a temporary fill-in.

"We felt comfortable with where we were at from a starting standpoint with our depth," Hazen said. "The prognosis with Robbie was good in terms of what we would expect time-frame-wise. And we had other needs. We had to pick and choose which direction we were going to go."
Plus, Hazen said, given the rotation's success this year -- it entered Thursday second in the National League with a 3.50 ERA -- whomever the D-backs acquired would likely have had to shift to the bullpen when Ray returned.
"There was no guarantee that that starting pitcher was going to be able to transition into the bullpen for a month or two or three weeks, whatever it would be," Hazen said. "So we kind of had to make choices, and those were the choices that we made."
Injury updates
• Shortstop Chris Owings had a plate inserted in his right hand during surgery Monday. Owings fractured his middle finger in Sunday's game, and he is expected to be out until late September.

• Outfielder Yasmany Tomas (right groin) is starting some baserunning activity. He has been hitting and throwing, but a timetable for his return is still unknown.
• Randall Delgado (right elbow inflammation) played catch from 75 feet Wednesday. He will take Thursday off before throwing again.
