MLB.com reporters make Derby predictions

July 16th, 2018

Ahead of tonight's T-Mobile Home Run Derby, we asked our reporters covering the event at Nationals Park to give their predictions. Not surprisingly, a lot of folks are counting on home-field advantage playing a big role.

ALYSON FOOTER
Winner:
Runner up:
It's Harper's park and Harper's show. He'll feel the adrenaline from the swell of fan support and give the people what they want.

RICHARD JUSTICE
Winner: Harper
Runner-up:
Harper loves the big moment and the spotlight. He'll be energized by the hometown cheers. Better yet, the Home Run Derby will spark a second-half surge for both Harper and the Nationals.

MARK FEINSAND
Winner
: Bregman
Runner-up:
The pressure to deliver in front of the home crowd will be Harper's downfall, but Bregman and Baez -- two young guys with a lot of swag -- will make the finals. Bregman will win in the end to continue his incredible 12-month run.

JAMAL COLLIER
Winner: Harper
Runner-up:
These are the stages Harper thrives on. In his home ballpark, with the baseball world watching, Harper could put on a show that will make people ready to move on from a disappointing first half.

JESSE SANCHEZ
Winner:
Harper
Runner up: Bregman
Harper will embrace the moment and feed off of the energy of the hometown crowd. It's his time to shine. Bregman might not hit the moonshots the others will hit, but he has enough power to make it to the final.

ANTHONY CASTROVINCE
Winner
: Schwarber
Runner up: Harper
The Derby format rewards distance by extending the clock for those who reach or exceed 440 feet with their homers, which is why I'm siding with more "conventional" choices over the likes of Baez and Bregman. Harper will put on a show in his adopted hometown, but Schwarber will take the crown.

BRITTANY GHIROLI
Winner: Harper
Runner-up: Schwarber
Harper is the only player in this year's field to have competed in the Derby, and he's the hometown hero. There's pressure, but the guy loves the big stage.

ADAM McCALVY
Winner
: Aguilar
Runner-up: Baez
I'm not betting against Aguilar. Not after watching him go from waiver claim 18 months ago to fighting his way into the fringes of two straight Opening Day rosters with the Brewers, to an everyday spot in the lineup and the top of the National League home run leaderboard, and now to the All-Star Game.
