Torii Hunter and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim named American League Co-Players of the Week
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielders Torii Hunter and Mike Trout have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for the period ending June 10th. They are the first pair of teammates to claim the AL's weekly award since Josh Hamilton and Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers on June 14, 2010. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
Hunter batted .500 (11-for-22) with four home runs, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in five games en route to claiming his third career AL Player of the Week honor (last accomplished on 9/25/2006). Among League leaders, the 36-year-old paced the AL in total bases (23), tied for first in homers and runs scored, was second in RBI and slugging percentage (1.045), was tied for second in hits and was third in batting average and on-base percentage (.560). With his first career weekly award, the rookie Trout finished the week with a .520 (13-for-25) batting average, two doubles, four RBI, 10 runs scored and four stolen bases in six games. The Vineland, New Jersey native finished tops in the AL in hits, tied for first in runs and steals and was second in batting average and on-base percentage (.567). On June 4th, the 20-year-old Trout had his first career four-hit game, including a double and two RBI in the 8-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners in Anaheim. The next night, Hunter combined with teammate Mark Trumbo on back-to-back homers, a first for the Angels this season, as the Halos defeated the Mariners, 6-1, to split a two-game set between the two Clubs. In an Interleague matchup with the Colorado Rockies on Friday, Hunter went 3-for-5 with a pair of two-run homers and six RBI, while Trout added three hits and three runs scored of his own to boost the Angels to a 7-2 victory at Coors Field. Hunter, a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, enjoyed the 17th multi-homer game of his 16-year career in his first ever game in Denver. Two of Trout's three runs scored came on the Hunter homers, and his third run came on an Albert Pujols double in the ninth inning. On Saturday, Hunter, a four-time AL All-Star, went 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored while Trout went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored to help Los Angeles to an 11-5 triumph over the Rockies. In the series finale on Sunday, the Angels' 1-2 hitters struck again as they edged Colorado, 10-8, to complete the sweep. Hunter notched his third consecutive three-hit day, which included a two-run shot, three runs scored and three RBI, and Trout collected a pair of hits, with a double, a walk and two runs scored as the pair combined to go 17-for-29 with a double, three homers, 11 RBI and 16 runs scored in the three-game set with Colorado.
In another outstanding performance last week, the Seattle Mariners used a record-tying six pitchers – starter Kevin Millwood and relievers Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen – to no-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1-0 victory on Friday. It marked the 10th combined no-hitter in MLB history and the first since the Houston Astros accomplished the feat in 2003.
