Ichiro passes Hall of Famer, then sparks Marlins

Outfielder breaks tie with Crawford, 37 away from 3,000 after 2 hits, including table-setting single

MIAMI -- On top of scoring the Marlins' first run Tuesday night that broke a scoreless tie against the Pirates, Ichiro Suzuki also achieved another milestone in the 3-1 win at Marlins Park.
With his two-hit performance, the 42-year-old now has 2,963 career hits, moving him past Hall of Famer Sam Crawford for 31st on Major League Baseball's all-time list. Ichiro is now 37 hits shy of 3,000.
Hit No. 2,963 was a big one. Ichiro's seventh-inning single ignited Miami's three-run rally that led to the victory. He later scored on Christian Yelich's single to right. The run also ended a streak of 15 straight scoreless innings for the Marlins.
"It was good," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "It seemed like we kind of ran him out of steam last week. When everybody got hurt together, you know we lose [Yelich] and [Giancarlo Stanton], we threw him out there."
Ichiro's third-inning single broke a 1-for-24 skid, dating back to an 0-for-5 day against the Rays on May 24. Mattingly said that game, Ichiro's fourth start in a row, may have fatigued him. Still, the outfielder has been consistent, hitting .316 in May and .322 on the season.
"It seemed like we might've pushed him a little bit too far there, out of necessity," Mattingly said. "It looked like it took him a couple of days to kind of recover again."
