ICYMI: Friars take finale behind Shields, HRs

The Padres secured a happy flight home on Sunday afternoon after taking the series finale from the Phillies, 9-4, at Citizens Bank Park. After an almost "lights-out" outing from James Shields and a 16-hit performance by the offense, the Swinging Friars improved to 63-67 on the year, with Shields collecting his 10th victory of the season.

Shields showed great dominance over the Phillies' bats, throwing seven innings of one-run baseball on only six hits and one walk. Shields' lone mistake came via a Cameron Rupp solo home run in the second inning, but outside of that hiccup, the right-hander struck out eight and needed only 108 pitches to earn the "W."

Thanks to Shields' efficiency, the Padres' bullpen was able to gain some much-needed rest as interim manager Pat Murphy called upon righty Odrisamer Despaigne to close out the last two innings. Despaigne surrendered three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts over two innings.

Outside of Shields' solid performance, the offense turned up the heat, with four Friars collecting multiple hits. Yonder Alonso went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Jedd Gyorko, Derek Norris and Clint Barmes all collected a pair of base knocks. Additionally, Norris and Barmes each collected RBIs in the Padres' half of the eighth inning when the team piled on three runs late in the game.

Matt Kemp opened the scoring for San Diego in the first inning, launching a two-run homer for his 16th of the season and his 79th and 80th RBIs. Along with Kemp's homer, Justin Upton belted his 24th home run of the season for his 72nd RBI, while Yangervis Solarte added his 11th homer of the year. Brett Wallace collected an RBI pinch-hit single in the eighth inning as well.

While the bats were lively and effective, the gloves also put in a solid effort as the Padres turned three double plays. The combination of Shields and Despaigne accumulated double-digit strikeouts from the mound while Shields was able to pick off Odubel Herrera in the fifth inning. Norris also nabbed a runner trying to steal.

With San Diego closing out its road trip with a victory on Sunday, the Padres will now return home to Petco Park to start a three-game series against the Rangers on Monday, when Tyson Ross will take the hill opposite Colby Lewis at 7:10 p.m. PT.
