Tribe acquires Maronde; Giambi to 60-day DL

CLEVELAND -- The Tribe brought another southpaw into the fold on Saturday, acquiring left-handed reliever Nick Maronde from the Angels in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. Designated hitter Jason Giambi (left knee inflammation) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster.

Maronde, 24, allowed nine runs in 6 1/3 innings with the Angels this season, while posting a 10.50 ERA in 18 outings across stints with Triple-A Salt Lake, Double-A Arkansas and the Arizona League Angels. The former 2011 third-round Draft choice and University of Florida product claims a career 3.23 ERA, 227 strikeouts and 105 walks over four seasons in the Minors.

Maronde will be optioned to one of Cleveland's Minor League affiliates, though which one has yet to be determined.

Tribe manager Terry Francona believes that Giambi, who hit the DL on June 12 with the left knee injury, could play again this season. But with Nick Swisher already handling DH duties and the team carrying two catchers with Carlos Santana playing first base full time, Giambi's role has essentially been overtaken.

"We've actually talked to G, probably will again," Francona said before Saturday's game. "It's a situation we knew when we signed G. Fortunately, he gets it. Not all players do. He always knows that the team comes first."

Giambi is hitting .128 with a pair of homers in 15 games. The 43-year-old has made three separate trips to the DL this season, due to a fractured rib, a right calf strain and the current knee injury.
