CLEVELAND -- The Indians placed outfielder Brandon Guyer on the disabled list on Sunday as part of a pair of roster moves ahead of the Tribe's game against the Twins.
Guyer landed on the 10-day DL with a left wrist sprain, leading Cleveland to purchase the contract of outfielder Daniel Robertson from Triple-A Columbus. The Indians also promoted infielder Erik Gonzalez from Triple-A, giving him the opportunity to fill the team's super-utility role.
Indians manager Terry Francona noted that Guyer has felt some discomfort in his wrist for the past week, but aggravated the injury on a swing in Friday's game against Minnesota.
"It was something that was tolerable," Francona said. "He took his last swing the other night and really felt it, to the point that he couldn't hit [on Saturday]. We kept him here, just because we felt like we were a little thin -- maybe he could pinch-run, or do something like that."
Francona added that Guyer underwent an MRI exam on Sunday and was going to review the results with hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham. The manager said the DL "was an easy call," because the Indians felt the outfielder would be out at least five to seven days.
Veteran utility man Michael Martinez was designated for assignment, giving the Indians 10 days to either trade or release him. If Martinez clears waivers, he could accept an outright assignment to the Minors.
Guyer is batting .182 with a .528 OPS through 21 games this season, and has struggled against lefties (.174 average and .507 OPS). He has been used primarily as a right fielder with lefties on the mound, given that he posted a 1.021 OPS off southpaws last season.
Robertson, 31, who was in Spring Training as a non-roster invitee, can provide outfield depth for all three positions. He was limited to four games at Columbus this season due to a left hamstring injury. Robertson had big league stints with the Rangers, Angels and Mariners in the past three campaigns.
The 25-year-old Gonzalez has hit .269 with 12 extra-base hits, 11 RBIs and 36 hits in 32 games for Columbus this season. He has played shortstop (23 games), second base (five), outfield (four), and third (two). Gonzalez hit .313 (.665 OPS) in 21 games with Cleveland in 2016.
"He's such a good defender, especially in the infield -- short and second," Francona said. "He's a shortstop and he's a really good defensive shortstop. But, because of his skills, he can move around and he's pretty reliable. Even to the point where you could put him in the outfield. He's pretty athletic."
