CLEVELAND -- With his right thumb wrapped in a black brace on Tuesday, Indians catcher Roberto Perez stood at his locker, unsure how much time he is going to be sidelined. Right now, there is only one positive when it comes to his hand injury.
"I'm glad I got the out," Perez said with a smile.
During Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies, Perez made a great diving tag on Odubel Herrera at home plate for a highlight-reel out in the fifth inning. The catcher sustained a fractured thumb on the play, however, and will have his hand re-examined by Dr. Thomas Graham on Thursday in Cleveland to plan a course of action.
Surgery has not been ruled out at this point for Perez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.

"The idea is that will be three more days, allowing some of the swelling to dissipate," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "At that time, a decision will be made: 'OK, do we continue with the splint and therapy in the training room and rest, followed by exercises, things like that? Or, do they go in and do surgery?' That will be determined on Thursday."
While Perez's timetable for return is not clear right now, Francona said a comeback from surgery might not take much longer than a rest-and-rehab approach. The manager did note that Perez had indicated that his hand has felt increasingly better over the past couple days.
"I'm just rehabbing it, icing it, keeping myself calm, because it's going to be a long process," Perez said. "Unfortunately, I'm probably out for a while. They haven't said how long. ... Hopefully, I'm good. Hopefully, I don't need surgery."
Other items of note from Tuesday
• In a start for Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, right-hander Cody Anderson allowed four runs on seven hits, including two home runs, in 5 2/3 innings. Anderson struck out six, walked three and hit one batter, but Francona said the reports were that the righty began to find more of a comfort level with his mechanics as the outing wore on. Anderson is slated to be recalled to start for the Indians on Saturday.
"I think the first three innings, he was a little frustrated with his mechanics," Francona said. "It seemed like the last two innings he felt much better about where he was, so hopefully he can take that and continue it into his next game here. By that, I mean his direction to the plate. He's been kind of fighting that a little bit."
• Francona indicated that right-hander Carlos Carrasco (on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring) has progressed to some light "land-based jogging." The manager noted that most of the pitcher's rehab work is restricted activities in a pool and in the training room. Said Francona: "He's doing everything he can."
