Indians sign infielder, pitcher to Minor League deals

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have wasted little time this offseason in adding bodies to the mix. Cleveland continued to add to its depth chart on Friday with the signings of infielder Ryan Rohlinger and pitcher J.C. Ramirez.

Both players were signed to Minor League contracts that include invitations to attend Spring Training with the big league club.

Rohlinger will return for his third season in the Tribe's system, following stints with Triple-A Columbus in each of the past two years. The 30-year-old infielder bounced between second base, shortstop and third base for the Clippers this past season, hitting .266 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 92 games at Triple-A.

In parts of four years with the Giants from 2008-11, Rohlinger hit .134 in 67 at-bats at the big league level.

Ramirez, 25, joins the Indians after spending the bulk of the 2013 season in the Phillies' Minor Leagues. Between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley last year, the right-hander went 5-2 with a 4.04 ERA in 34 games, in which he had 44 strikeouts against 25 walks in 49 innings.

Ramirez, who has a 4.29 ERA in eight Minor League seasons, posted a 7.50 ERA in 18 games for Philadelphia last season.

With Rohlinger and Ramirez added, the Indians now have four non-roster invites in the fold for Spring Training. Veteran slugger Jason Giambi and reliever Matt Capps were also signed this offseason to Minor League contracts.
