Indians to promote five (5) players as Major League Rosters expand

The Cleveland Indians today announced the following roster moves relative to the Major League roster:

  • Recalled RHP PRESTON GUILMET (#36), LHP NICK HAGADONE (#50) and RHP BLAKE WOOD (#49) from AAA Columbus.
  • Purchased the contract of INF JOSE RAMIREZ (#62) from AA Akron.
  • Purchased the contract of C KELLY SHOPPACH (#40) from AAA Columbus.
  • Designated INF JUAN DIAZ and OF TIM FEDROFF for assignment.

Guilmet, 26, has spent most of the season at Triple-A Columbus where he went 5-4 w/20 saves and a 1.68ERA in 49 relief appearances (64.1IP, 43H, 19R/12ER, 72K, .182AVG). He currently ranks 3rd in the International League in saves and limited Triple-A right-handed hitters to a .165 (22-133) average against. Since June 29 with the Clippers he owns an ERA of 0.33 over his last 18 outings (27.1IP, 13H, 1ER, 30K) and did not allow a run after July 31 (13.0IP). He has appeared in 2 games with the Indians over 2 stints with Cleveland in July and August (10.80ERA, 3.1IP, 6H, 4R/ER) and made his MLB debut on July 10 vs. Toronto.

Hagadone, 27, has split the season between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus, spending 5 stints with the Indians in 2013 where he has posted an ERA of 5.33 in 28 relief outings (25.1IP, 18H, 15ER, 16BB, 23K, .209AVG). Between his stints in Cleveland he went 2-3 with 7 saves and a 2.51 ERA in 27 games (32.1IP, 24H, 9ER, 17BB, 46K, .203AVG, 12.8SO per 9.0IP) for Triple-A Columbus. From July 26-August 30 he posted an ERA of 1.84 with the Clippers (14.2IP, 3ER).

Blake Wood, 28, spent the first half of 2013 rehabbing back from 2012 reconstructive surgery on his right elbow before being activated and optioned to AAA Columbus on July 14 after being claimed off outright waivers from Kansas City in November. During his tenure with the Clippers he went 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA (16.2IP, 11H, 4ER, 23K) as he limited Triple-A hitters to a .186 (11-59) average against and fanned 12.4 batters per 9.0IP.

Ramirez, 20, is making his Major League debut after making the jump from A Lake County to AA Akron in 2013 where he hit .272 (131-482) with 78 runs scored, 16 doubles, 6 triples, 3 home runs and 38 RBI in 113 games. He is leading the Eastern League in stolen bases (39), is 4th in runs scored (78) and 12th in base hits (131) while hitting .324 (44-136) off left-handed pitchers and .296 (53-179) with runners on base. With Akron he appeared in 50 games at shortstop, 53 games at second base and 8 games at third base. He entered the 2013 season as the 9th-best prospect in the Indians system according to MLB.com.

Shoppach, 33, was signed by Cleveland to a free agent Minor League contract on August 30 after signing with the Seattle Mariners in the off-season and spent the first two and a half months of the season with Seattle, hitting .196 (21-107) with 7 doubles, 3 home runs and 9 RBI in 35 games before being released on June 20. The Baylor University product later spent July in the Washington Nationals organization (AAA Syracuse) and August in the Pittsburgh Pirates system (AAA Indianapolis) before requesting his release on August 28. He started at catcher last night for AAA Columbus (1-3) in his first game back with the Cleveland organization.

The Major League roster current consists of 30 players (15P-3C-7INF-5OF)
