Pedroia lands on DL; Hanley day to day
Bradley, Marrero, Aro join Red Sox's roster with veterans sidelined
BOSTON -- The Red Sox will be without Dustin Pedroia for at least a couple of weeks and without Hanley Ramirez for a few days. Pedroia, Boston's invaluable second baseman, was placed on the disabled list before Thursday's 8-6 loss to Baltimore with a right hamstring strain.

"I kind of just skidded; it slipped out before I got to the bag, and I tried to recover," Pedroia said of his two-run single during Boston's 5-1 win over Baltimore on Wednesday night. "You deal with it the best you can. It's unfortunate. It's something you can't dwell on. It happens. It's part of the game, I guess. You guys know me -- I'll be back as fast as I can."
Ramirez is day to day as he recovers from a left hand bruise. Fortunately, Ramirez was able to avoid a DL stint. Both players were injured on Wednesday night.

"Hanley is day to day after the CT scan and X-rays showed no fractures or any displacement, bone-wise," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "He's still swollen, and he's got some soreness in there, so hopefully this is just a couple of days before he gets back to us."
The Red Sox added reinforcements for Thursday's game. Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket, and infielder Deven Marrero, who was not on the 40-man roster, was also selected from the Triple-A roster. To open a spot for Marrero, catcher Erik Kratz was designated for assignment. Right-hander Jonathan Aro was also selected to the roster to fill the spot vacated by Joe Kelly, who was optioned to Triple-A. Aro made his big league debut in Thursday's game, allowing one run on four hits while striking out two over 1 1/3 innings.

"I've never pulled a muscle before," said Pedroia, who underwent advanced imaging after Wednesday's game. "It's just weird. Right before I hit the bag, my foot kind of slipped out and I hit the bag with my left foot, so I tried to just recover and stop, so I slipped, basically. It's a thing you can't prevent, man. That's the part that frustrates me mentally. You work hard in the weight room and in the offseason trying to do things to prevent injury, and little things happen. It's tough. We'll get through it. Guys will come together and hold it down until I get back, and then we'll go."
"He's the heart and soul of our team, in the short description of it," Farrell said of Pedroia. "The way he plays, what he means in the clubhouse, what he means on the field with his performance -- he's probably having a career year to date. Hopefully, this is on the shorter end on the time missed. In other words, after the 15 days, hopefully he comes back, but there's no projected date on his return. He'll be back as soon as he's capable."

Ramirez was struck by a batted ball hit by teammate Xander Bogaerts while on the basepaths. Knowing full well what Pedroia means to the Red Sox, Ramirez will try to fast-track his own return.
"Now, we're going to miss that guy for a little bit of time," Ramirez said of Pedroia, who's hitting .306 with nine homers, 33 RBIs, 34 runs scored and a .367 on-base percentage. "That's why I'm going to try to get back to the lineup as soon as I can, because both of us can't be out of the lineup at the same time."
Brock Holt will be Boston's primary second baseman while Pedroia is out. Bradley, who has had a strong year for Pawtucket, played right field and batted ninth on Thursday.
Bradley has played in 51 games for Pawtucket and was hitting .322 with four homers and 18 doubles before being recalled. Marrero was batting .241 with four homers, 21 RBIs and nine stolen bases in 66 games. Aro, who has appeared in 10 games in relief for Pawtucket, had a 1.61 ERA with 30 strikeouts and just three walks in 22 1/3 innings.
Worth noting
• The Red Sox announced after Thursday's game that they have signed three additional players from this year's Draft: high school right-hander Daniel Zandona, taken in the 21st round (621st overall); Lynn University righty Max Watt, a 22nd-rounder; and Longwood University outfielder Kyri Washington, taken in the 23rd round.
The club has signed 19 of the 39 players it drafted earlier this month.
