Injured Kemp won't swing bat until after break

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers want Matt Kemp to avoid swinging a bat for a week while the outfielder recovers from an irritated shoulder joint.

Kemp did a light workout on the field at Dodger Stadium Thursday afternoon, but won't pick up a bat until the All-Star break next week.

"I'm sure he's capable of swinging a bat, but they want to let this thing totally die down with the All-Star break coming," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "We've got this period of time, so let the medication work, shut him down for seven days and then start."

While the inflammation is where Kemp's left collarbone meets the shoulder, the club says the injury is unrelated to offseason shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum and frayed rotator cuff.

Kemp felt pain in the shoulder on a swing and miss on Friday in San Francisco. He went on the disabled list on Monday.
