Injury updates: Tebow, Bruce, Gohara

February 25th, 2018

Just days into Spring Training, a throng of players find themselves on the mend and are working their way back to the field. Perhaps no club was more beleaguered through injury attrition last year than the Mets, which makes their current injury report even more sobering.
Here is a look at health-related notes compiled by MLB.com reporters and contributors from Sunday:
Tebow sprains ankle on sprinkler
Following what may be the most bizarre injury accident thus far this spring, is listed by the Mets as day to day. The former Heisman Trophy winner revealed that he sprained his left ankle when tripping over an outfield sprinkler head last week, which has yet to allow him to play in a Grapefruit League game. However, Tebow did take live batting practice against Matt Harvey on Friday and again on Sunday.
The most famous Minor Leaguer since Michael Jordan has made a strong impression early in camp. He's dropped 12 pounds, created a more compact swing and has launched pull-side home runs with legitimate power. But perhaps the most notable attributes to his potential were the comments made by Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, who spoke with conviction when he said he believes Tebow will eventually be a Major Leaguer.

"That's my guess," Alderson said. "That's my hope. And to some extent now after a year and a half, a modest expectation."
Tebow, 30, is expected to break camp with Double-A Binghamton, which should begin a revealing chapter to his career. It's generally at this stage when players either make a significant ascent toward the Majors or wind up stalled and potentially out of the game. Alderson's comments were not shared lightly. Tebow was brought in with the chance to compete, and the experiment has manifested into promise.
Bruce, Lagares dealing with minor injuries
A pesky left heel that said has been lingering since last season has left him out of the Mets' Grapefruit League action thus far, though he is expected to be the club's designated hitter on Tuesday against the Astros, and he did take batting practice on Sunday.
Well-liked among teammates and the media for being eccentric, Bruce told reporters that the injury is so minor that he regretted they were wasting paper and battery life to document it, as MLB.com's Anthony DiComo noted.
Right-hander has a strained left hamstring but is listed as day-to-day. He's not expected to miss an extended period, and he did work out on Sunday.
Gohara a week behind with left groin injury
Among the most notable position battles this spring will be between the five pitchers vying for the final two spots in the Braves' starting rotation. One of those candidates, , may have hamstrung his immediate contention after suffering a left groin injury that has put him a week behind, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. More >

"The good thing is it's not his arm, so he's still throwing, he's playing catch," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Gohara. "We've just got to get him some [side sessions], live BP and stuff like that before we get him out there in a game. He's getting better. They say it's a day-to-day thing and that's pretty much what it is."
Gohara's groin began bothering him late last week, he said, though because the Braves have multiple off-days early in camp, there's a chance he could be among the first five to make a start in the regular season. He is favored to be part of the Opening Day rotation with fellow left-hander , both of whom debuted last season. Management has only confirmed that , Mike Foltynewicz and will be among the five that break camp in the rotation.
Smith (strained right quad) to undergo MRI
Fighting to force a difficult roster decision from the Mets, first baseman already has an uphill battle this spring. Smith's 49-game audition last year wasn't as promising as he and the club hoped for, which prompted the Mets to sign veteran to establish stability at the position. Smith was then benched for Friday's Grapefruit League opener after showing up at the club's facility late. And now, he's nursing a strained right quad, requiring an MRI on Monday.

Smith, 22, said he tightened his quad while running to third base in Saturday's game against the Cardinals, during which he went 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch. He also made an athletic snare at first base on a groundout that robbed of a single in his Grapefruit League debut. Smith is competing for at-bats this spring with Mets No. 4 prospect, who is likely still one year away from being Major League ready.
