OAKLAND -- Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez is trying to help with the relief efforts for Hurricane Maria, which has devastated his home island of Puerto Rico.
"It makes me cry because it's tough," Rodriguez told Channel 5 in Dallas. "I mean, there's nothing in Puerto Rico that stayed there, it's gone."
Rodriguez has set up a dropoff location at 2800 Story Road West in Irving. People who wish to donate to the relief efforts can bring by supplies between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday.
Items needed are power generators, tents, construction lumber, hygiene products, first aid kits, over the counter medicine, blankets, t-shirts, underwear and bottles of water.
The Rangers announced Saturday that the club will donate the proceeds from their Texas 2 Split 50/50 Raffle for Monday's home game against the Astros to victims in in Puerto Rico.
The funds will be donated to United for Puerto Rico-Unidos por Puerto Rico, the charity in which Rodriguez is involved.
"The thoughts of the Texas Rangers organization are with all the individuals in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean who have been affected by this devastating hurricane," said Neil Leibman, chairman of the Rangers ownership committee. "We pray for their safety and are honored to be assisting Pudge Rodriguez in his outstanding humanitarian efforts."
