Promotion worth the (short) wait for Blash

After sensational spring, OF called up in time for Padres' home opener

April 7th, 2017

SAN DIEGO -- Two home openers in two days? Yeah, it's been a busy 24 hours for .
"I'll take it," Blash said with a smile before the opener at Petco Park on Friday. "Definitely wanted to be here for this one."
The Padres selected Blash's contract Thursday, placing on the seven-day concussion disabled list after he took a foul ball off his mask Thursday. Blash played Thursday night in El Paso, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, before he was told he'd be headed to San Diego.

The righty slugger certainly earned his promotion during Spring Training. He posted a .986 OPS with seven homers in the Cactus League, and he was one of the most surprising omissions from the Opening Day roster.
"Those are the types of decisions you really can't think about," Blash said. "I had a really good spring, started in El Paso, and at the end of the day, that's all it was. I was hoping to be back at some point."
Blash got back rather quickly. And unfortunately for the Padres, it came at the expense of Sanchez, who has dealt with concussion issues in the past.
Sanchez seems to take an uncharacteristic number of knocks. Earlier this spring, he missed time in camp after fouling a ball off his foot. While in San Francisco, he earned the nickname "El Iman," or "the Magnet."
"For some reason, I take a lot of hits," Sanchez said. "I don't know why. I've been asking myself that for a lot of years. The scariest thing are the hits to the head."
The extent of Sanchez's current ailment remains unclear, and the Padres will monitor his situation over the next week.
Dickerson slowed
To clear room for Blash on the 40-man roster, the Padres moved Alex Dickerson to the 60-day disabled list. The left fielder has been out since mid-March with a bulging disk in his back.
"It's just a move that's going to force me to really take my time," Dickerson said. "I think it's going to be good that it just slows me down, makes sure I do this right. It takes it out of my hands, as far as the timeline."
The Padres had initially hoped Dickerson could return in April. But the earliest date he would now be available is June 1. The club is optimistic Dickerson will hit that date and will be available for a Minor League rehab stint a week or two beforehand.
Friedrich on the mend
In positive injury news, tests on 's pitching arm revealed no structural damage to his strained left lat muscle or sore elbow.
The Padres haven't yet put together a recovery plan for Friedrich, so there's no timetable on his return. But he will head back to their Spring Training complex in Peoria, Ariz., on Sunday.
Friedrich said his arm never quite kicked into full gear this spring. He suffered the lat strain before a Cactus League start against the Dodgers. Then, he said he overcompensated a bit during that outing, causing the back of his elbow to swell.
"After that outing, I felt like, 'OK, I'm making this situation worse by throwing,'" Friedrich said. "It was the best-case scenario that it was a strain in my lat. But there was some tearing. So now after two weeks, I feel like I'm good to go."
