KANSAS CITY -- After nearly three days away from his teammates, right-hander Jacob deGrom met the club in Kansas City on Saturday and was present in the dugout for Opening Night on Sunday.
Most likely, his stay will be temporary. Should deGrom's wife go into labor with the couple's first child at any point early this week -- she is due on Tuesday -- deGrom will catch a flight to Florida to be with her. He is scheduled to start the Mets' home opener, on Friday afternoon against the Phillies.
When the Mets traveled to Las Vegas late last week, deGrom stayed in Florida in case the child arrived early.
Worth noting:
• Though Juan Lagares started in center field on Sunday, pushing Yoenis Cespedes to left and Michael Conforto to designated hitter, the Mets may shake things up as soon as Tuesday. Because scheduled Royals starter Chris Young is traditionally better against right-handed hitting, the Mets are tentatively planning to use Alejandro De Aza in the outfield instead of Lagares.
