CHICAGO -- White Sox right-hander Jake Petricka was placed on the 10-day disabled list prior to Thursday's series finale with the Tigers due to a strained right lat. Tommy Kahnle was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Petricka.
Petricka, 28, made only nine appearances in 2016 after undergoing surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip. He hurled one scoreless inning during Tuesday's season-opening loss before the issue arose.
"What he said was, about a pitch into the Jose Cabrera at-bat, the second inning, he felt something," said White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper, referring to Petricka's walk of Cabrera in the seventh. "Basically he's going to be out for a bit.
"We're not expecting him to be out for a three-month thing or anything like that, but then the good news about however long it is we've only got to get him back to two innings. So it doesn't take nearly as long as a starter. Sometimes it's funny how things work --- one door closes and Tommy Kahnle is up and he has another opportunity to show what he can do."
Kahnle, 27, finished 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA over 29 appearances in '16, striking out 25 over 27 1/3 innings. For his career, Kahnle has fanned 127 and allowed 103 hits in 129 1/3 innings but has walked 79. He yielded one run over his final 17 2/3 innings pitched last season.
"I wasn't expecting something to happen that quick. When duty calls, I guess," said Kahnle, who found out during Charlotte's Wednesday workout and the finished Thursday's 11-2 win with a scoreless ninth inning. "Actually my wife finally unpacked my suitcase yesterday and we found out. She was like, 'Oh, gosh. Really?' It was pretty funny.
"My fastball command wasn't really there this spring. It was hit or miss. I had that sim game the other day and it felt like I found it again. Hopefully I can run with it from there."
