KANSAS CITY -- As expected, the Royals declined the mutual option of $12 million to renew right-hander Jason Hammel's contract, the club announced on Tuesday.
The Royals will exercise the $2 million buyout on Hammel's deal, thus making him a free agent.
Hammel, 36, posted a 12-27 record with a 5.59 ERA with the Royals over two seasons.
