TEMPE, Ariz. -- Mike Trout and Albert Pujols hit back-to-back home runs, Jason Heyward smoked a ball about 460 feet and the Cubs and Angels settled for an 8-8 tie on Monday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Cubs second baseman Tommy La Stella, who went 3-for-4 to raise his spring average to .385, tied the score at 6 with an RBI single in the eighth. Albert Almora followed with the go-ahead single off Javy Guerra. Matt Murton hit a solo homer in the ninth for the Cubs' third homer of the game.
The Angels struck for two runs in the ninth to tie it. Jefry Marte's RBI single cut the deficit to 8-7 before he scored the tying run on Craig Gentry's two-out single.

The Cubs, seven days removed from opening their season at Angel Stadium, plated five runs in a third inning that was highlighted by a three-run homer from Heyward and a solo shot by Anthony Rizzo. They have gone deep three times each this spring.

Heyward's ball off Nick Tropeano bounced off the side of the batting cage that sits in the Angels' right-field parking lot.

The Angels answered with five runs in the fourth against Kyle Hendricks. Trout hit a solo homer to left field, Pujols followed with his fifth and Carlos Perez helped tack on three more, as the catcher hit an RBI single, drew a throw while stealing second that allowed Andrelton Simmons to score from third, then scored on a throwing error by Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant.

Tropeano, making his first start in 12 days after being out with the flu, was charged with five runs on six hits and two walks in four innings, putting his Cactus League ERA at 7.82. The 25-year-old right-hander was optioned to Triple-A after his start, which probably means Matt Shoemaker has claimed the fifth spot.

Simmons went 3-for-3 to raise his Cactus League batting average to .346. Pujols, playing his first spring game at first base, added a double deep into the left-center-field gap. For the Cubs, left fielder Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double.

Hendricks gave up only four runs in his first 19 frames, but he was charged with six runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Hendricks is well aware Trout and Pujols are going to hit home runs.
"That's going to happen," Hendricks said. "The biggest mistake I had today was the [Kole] Calhoun walk [in the fourth]. Solo home runs won't beat you. The one to Trout was a good pitch, the one to Pujols got more of the plate."

Hendricks said he did get a lot of positives from the outing, and was able to get back into his rhythm after a rough fourth inning. He quietly won the fifth spot in the Cubs' rotation.
"I just came out here and tried to make good pitches," Hendricks said. "I know the confidence they have in me, but I know how many good guys we have in our bullpen. It's healthy competition, but I tried to mentally stay away from that and focus on what I can control."

The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner is on track to start Opening Night on Monday in Anaheim against the Angels.
