Pridie pushes Rockies to walk-off win over Mariners

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Jason Pridie's RBI double to center field in the bottom of the ninth gave the Rockies a 4-3 victory over the Mariners on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 12,540 at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

The Rockies' Charlie Culberson singled against Mariners reliever Charlie Furbush to set up Pridie's game-winner. The Pridie double also made a winner of reliever Chad Bettis, who struck out two in a perfect top of the ninth. Bettis has pitched scoreless ball in eight appearances this spring.

Rockies catcher Jackson Williams tied the game at 3 with an RBI single in the seventh. Pridie was 2-for-4, and Michael Cuddyer was 2-for-3.

Lefty Brett Anderson, the Rockies' starter, gave up 12 hits in six innings, but used one double-play grounder and 10 groundouts to limit the Mariners to three runs and keep his team within reach. Anderson's slider lacked effectiveness in put-away situations, but he was able to find ways to minimize damage.

"All things considered, I got through six innings with a quality start, and I'll go on to tomorrow," Anderson said.

One of the hits off Anderson was Justin Smoak's homer to deep left-center field to open the second inning.

"Justin Smoak is, I think, hitting .800 off of me," said Anderson, who pitched for the Athletics in the American League West, often against the Mariners, before being traded to the Rockies this past winter.

"Bend and don't break; he was the epitome of that today, because he knows what he's doing," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I saw Tommy Glavine do that firsthand for three years [as a teammate with the Braves]. You'd think you had him in trouble a few different times, and you'd look up and it would be seven innings and you'd have two runs."

Mariners lefty starter Roenis Elias, who pitched at Double-A Jackson last season but is making a bid for the Opening Day Major League rotation, held the Rockies to four hits in 5 1/3 innings, during which he struck out four and walked two. The only runs he gave up came on Wilin Rosario's homer to left field with two out in the fourth. The outing left Elias' ERA at 2.04.

Despite never pitching above Double-A ball, Elias doesn't seem intimidated by pitching against Major League hitters.

"I did what I always do," Elias said through interpreter Fernando Alcala. "I just went in there and tried to throw strikes."

He gave up a leadoff double in the second and a leadoff triple in the fifth, but stranded both runners to limit the damage.

"I just tell myself that runner isn't going to score," Elias said. "I just throw the ball hard inside and be aggressive."
