Cubs call up Baez, three others

Berry, Cahill, Wada join club in first wave of moves as rosters expand

CHICAGO -- Javier Baez is one of four players called up by the Cubs on Tuesday as rosters expanded.

Outfielder Quintin Berry, as well as pitchers Trevor Cahill and Tsuyoshi Wada all join Baez on the 40-man roster as the Cubs make their push for the National League's second Wild Card spot.

The moves come after Chicago traded for Seattle outfielder Austin Jackson on Monday, where all players will be eligible for the postseason.

"I think for the most part we're in pretty good shape going forward, but you gotta be vigilant," said manager Joe Maddon before the game Monday. "Things can happen, and you gotta be prepared for different things to occur whether it's depth-wise or just rest-wise."

Baez highlights the group after hitting .324 in 70 games with Triple-A Iowa this season, even after he missed time due to a death in the family and a finger injury. He added 13 home runs and 62 RBIs in Iowa while striking out 76 times -- down from 130 strikeouts last season.

Maddon noted that he liked the depth the second baseman can bring to an already crowded infield. Chicago has already used five players on its active roster at second base this season.

"You gotta rest [players] at some point," Maddon said. "It's not just about physical fatigue, it's mental fatigue. That's always my biggest concern, especially when a guy struggles a bit. That'll really wear you down going into the last month of the season. So we have to be cognizant of that as we continue along."

Wada returns to Chicago after he made seven starts earlier this season. The lefty posted a 1-1 record with a 3.73 ERA, but he threw more than six innings only once this season. He'll likely join the righty, Cahill, in the bullpen to add another arm to a 'pen that is without Jason Motte.

Berry was signed to a Minor League contract on Aug. 24.

It likely won't be the last of the Cubs' moves, though, as they figure to call up more once Iowa finishes its season on Sept 7.
