NEW YORK -- Russell Martin signed a five-year contract with the Blue Jays to be the everyday catcher, but he's had a surprising amount of work in the infield during his time in Toronto.
Martin made a surprise appearance at second base during Tuesday's 6-0 loss to the Yankees. It was his second time playing the infield this season, and his fourth since joining the Blue Jays prior to the 2015 season.
The 33-year-old catcher has proven himself capable of handling the infield, but whenever he plays there, it's because something went wrong. On Tuesday night it was Troy Tulowitzki being forced to leave the game in the seventh inning with tightness in his right quad.

Tulowitzki's unplanned departure meant that Ryan Goins went to shortstop while Martin went to second base. Darwin Barney, who started the game at second, was lifted in the seventh for a pinch-hitter.
"I think it was something that, I hadn't been moving around too much during the game, and then to get on it trying to steal a base, it just grabbed me," Tulowitzki said. "But nothing more than that."
Martin, who once asked to be the starting shortstop for Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic, has appeared in 19 big league games at third base. He's also made four appearances at second base, and he even made a rare appearance in right field for the Pirates in 2013.
Not bad for a guy who also owns a Gold Glove Award for his work behind the plate.
