Donaldson day to day with right calf tightness

Third baseman exits Sunday's game in sixth, but hopes to be ready Tuesday

ST. PETERSBURG -- Josh Donaldson was removed from Sunday afternoon's 7-2 loss to the Rays in the sixth inning with right calf tightness, but expects to be ready for Tuesday's home opener against Milwaukee.
Donaldson missed most of Spring Training with a similar injury, but he said the pain this time around was in a slightly different spot. He is listed as day to day but believes with some additional treatment this will not become a long-term issue.
"This was on the outside part of my calf," Donaldson said. "It sort of just started responding to some treatment and stuff that we were doing after. Everything checked out to be in good shape, and day to day is what they're telling me."
Donaldson was attempting to beat out a sixth-inning grounder when he appeared to sustain the injury, but he said it actually happened earlier in the game. The veteran slugger homered in the first inning and said he felt some discomfort in the area of his right calf as he rounded first base.

The 31-year-old initially tried to stretch it out and play through the pain, but when he ran to first base in the sixth inning, he realized that was not possible. He limped off the field and went directly to Toronto's clubhouse to be examined by the club's medical staff. A serious injury appears to have been ruled out.
"It almost felt like a little bit of a cramp," Donaldson said. "With my right calf, as cautious as we were in Spring Training, depending on the situation, I thought it was a good idea to get off of it for the rest of the day.
"I'm not worried about it. Honestly, I think it's very realistic that I will be ready for the home opener."
Toronto's offense has struggled to score runs during the first week of the season, and Donaldson was one of the few bright spots. He homered in the first inning vs. the Rays on Sunday afternoon and was hitting .348 at the time of the injury.
