ATLANTA -- Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth should be called Mr. Consistency, at least for this season anyway. He just continues to get on base. Werth extended his on-base streak to 46 games in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Braves, tying the franchise record held by Rusty Staub.
Werth tied the record in the fifth inning when he doubled to the left-field corner off Braves right-hander Rob Whalen, scoring Pedro Severino to make it a 3-1 game. Werth ended up going 2-for-4, later adding a single and a run scored.
Werth's run is the longest on-base streak since the Reds' Joey Votto went 48 straight games from Aug. 11 to Oct. 2, 2015. Werth has 43 hits and 32 walks during his current run.
"[The record] speaks of consistency," Werth said. "My game has always been getting on base. I think it kind of speaks to my game, what I've been able to do during the course of my career."
While Werth is pleased to share the franchise record, he was most pleased about driving in the deciding run in the fifth.
"When you are on base, you can score runs and that's how you win," Werth said. "Whatever I can do to help the team win, I'm just one man. I can [only] do so much. We seem to keep winning ballgames and keep taking games off the schedule."
Werth will have the opportunity to break the franchise record on Friday night when the Nationals face Braves righty Julio Teheran.
