All going well for Werth on rehab assignment
Nationals outfielder has been sidelined due to fractures in left wrist
WASHINGTON -- After playing a few games with Class A Advanced Potomac, Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth will continue his rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse starting Monday.
Werth hopes to be back with the Nationals within a week or two. He hasn't played in a Major League game since he suffered two small fractures in his left wrist on May 15.
"I feel good. I need to play and be in playing shape," Werth said. "I'm working some counts and I'm getting some pitches to hit."
Werth considers himself a No. 3 hitter, but he has experience batting leadoff. He was at the top of the order during the second half of the 2012 season.
"We got to see where I'm at, where I'm feeling. The fellas have been playing great," Werth said. "Whatever [manager] Matt [Williams] wants to do or where he thinks I fit in, it's fine with me. I just want to be in the lineup. I'll be happy to get back."
Other injury updates
• First baseman Ryan Zimmerman is on his way to a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg starting Sunday.
During the last week or so, Zimmerman has been taking batting practice and running the bases. He missed a month of action because of plantar fasciitis and said his left foot is feeling much better.
• A day after being forced to exit the game in the ninth inning due to cramps in both calves, Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa was back in the lineup on Sunday.
When Espinosa woke up on Sunday morning, he was no longer in pain. It helped that the trainers gave him two bags of fluid after Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Dodgers.
"I cooled down immediately. I stopped sweating immediately. But I'm fine," Espinosa said.
• Center fielder Denard Span, who has been on the disabled list since July 10 because of back tightness, has been able to run on a treadmill and play catch. He had cortisone injections in his back this past Monday.
"I feel better, but it's kind of hard to tell where I'm at," Span said. "I think the next couple of days, we'll be revving it up and see where I'm at."
