Werth's tying homer confirmed by replay in Miami

MIAMI -- Jayson Werth had some long drives during this series held in play by the spacious dimensions of Marlins Park. But off Jose Fernandez in the sixth inning on Wednesday night, the Nationals right fielder was not denied of a home run by instant replay.

Werth ripped an 0-1 Fernandez offering to deep right-center. The ball cleared the green padding, and a fan attempted to make the play. The fan touched the ball, and it bounced back onto the field.

The umpires signaled home run, and it was a pivotal one, because it pulled the Nationals even at 3 with the Marlins. The Nationals added three more runs in the eighth to win the series finale, 6-3.

Miami manager Mike Redmond asked if the umpires could review the play, to make sure it wasn't fan interference. The process didn't take long. After 22 seconds, the home run was confirmed.

"I went out there and said, 'Hey, I thought it was fan interference,'" Redmond said. "They looked at it and said it wasn't. They said that it was in the stands."

All three runs were unearned because Werth's two-out blast came in an inning catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia made a throwing error on Tanner Roark's bunt. Jose Lobaton led the inning off with a double and was safe at third when Roark bunted, and Saltalamacchia threw to third, trying to get the lead runner. The throw was wide, and Lobaton was safe.
