SEATTLE -- Shortstop Jean Segura, the Mariners' hottest hitter in the first week of the season, was taken out of the Mariners' 6-0 win in the home opener Monday against the Astros at Safeco Field after straining his right hamstring.
Manager Scott Servais said the situation isn't serious and he doesn't expect Segura to need to go on the 10-day disabled list.
"We'll have a better idea tomorrow when he comes in, but it's very mild," Servais said after the game. "Fingers crossed that he'll be OK either tomorrow or the next day."
Utility man Taylor Motter replaced Segura in his first action at shortstop this season and will likely get the start in Tuesday's game.
Segura reached on a fielder's choice in the third, then was doubled off first on a hard line drive by Mitch Haniger right at Astros first baseman Yulieski Gurriel. He appeared to injure himself diving back to the bag, but Servais said the hamstring actually was already sore.
"It actually happened earlier in the game," Servais said. "He was trying to get it stretched out and he went up and had the at-bat, got on base and got doubled up on the line drive and just didn't feel right. It's early in the season, let's just do the smart thing and get him out of there."
The 26-year-old Segura led the National League in hits last year for the D-backs and was Seattle's biggest offseason addition, acquired along with Haniger in a trade that sent right-hander Taijuan Walker and shortstop Ketel Marte to Arizona. Segura has started off this season by hitting .313 (10-for-32) from the leadoff spot, with one home run, three RBIs, six runs and three stolen bases in Seattle's first eight games.

The Mariners are thin on backup infielders, as they chose to go with an eight-man bullpen and only three position players on the bench to open the year, so outfielder Guillermo Heredia and veteran catcher Carlos Ruiz were the only others still available after Motter entered. And when Robinson Cano fouled a ball hard off his foot the next inning, Servais wasn't sure where he might have to go until Cano stayed in the game.
"That would have been tough," he said. "My mind was actually racing on who we were going to put out there. All kind of variations on what we had left on our bench, and one probably included Chooch [Ruiz] showing up somewhere in the infield. I'm glad we didn't have to go there. Robbie should be OK."
If the Mariners do need to recall an infielder, recently signed veteran James Beckham as well as Mike Freeman and Tyler Smith are the Triple-A Tacoma options, though none are on the 40-man roster. Shawn O'Malley remains on the 10-day disabled list after having his appendix taken out and dealing with a shoulder issue at the end of camp.
"We'll talk about it and go through the options," Servais said. "We have to get a report exactly where we think Segura will be. We are short, going with that extra pitcher right now, so we'll have to take a look at it."
