Gyorko exits with strained right hamstring

Special to MLB.com

MILWAUKEE -- Cardinals third baseman Jedd Gyorko could miss at least the next couple games after he strained his right hamstring and had to leave St. Louis' 8-4 win over the Brewers after five innings on Monday afternoon.

Gyorko was in Mike Matheny's starting lineup for a second straight game in large part because of his career performance against Milwaukee starter Zach Davies, as he entered play 10-for-16 with one homer against the right-hander.

Gyorko ripped an RBI double, advanced on an error and scored his first time up. Davies plunked him with two outs in the fifth, and Gyorko scored a second time when starting pitcher Miles Mikolas followed with a home run. He laced a single in his final at-bat in the sixth to lift his batting average to .500.

"It's a shame, because he's put together a couple of good at-bats," manager Mike Matheny said.

Gyorko will be examined further Tuesday.

"We're going to try and get him looked at a little more closely and figure out what we're dealing with," Matheny said. "They didn't see it being one of those radically pulled issues where you're talking about obvious tears."

Gyorko missed just more than two weeks with a right hamstring strain late last season.

"I don't think it's as bad as it was last year," Gyorko said. "But it's frustrating. I put a lot of effort in to make these things not happen."
